Dariusz Popiela raises funds for a special memorial

Dariusz Popiela, Polish kayaker who won silver medal in men’s K1 individual event and bronze medal in men’s team event at last year's Canoe Slalom European Championships, is active also outside the competition arena and has become involved in a special project. Together with his friends he is raising money to restore the memory of the murdered Jews of Krościenko, a village in Southern Poland.

ECA celebrates 25th anniversary with interesting events in 2018

European Canoe Association will celebrate the 25th anniversary since its founding in 1993 with some exciting events which are ahead of us in the year 2018. This season will bring Senior and Junior/U23 European Championships in both Olympic disciplines – canoe slalom and canoe sprint, paracanoeing European Championships, canoe marathon European Championships, Freestyle canoeing European Championships, Ocean Racing European Championships and Junior/U23 Wildwater Canoeing European Championships. We will also see Canoe Polo Clubs European Championships, ECA Canoe Polo Cups as well as European Cup races in Wildwater canoeing and canoe slalom.

Marek Wisła (1957 – 2018)
Another sad news comes from Poland. Former canoe sprinter Marek Wisła died on January 29th. Marek Wisła competed in the late 1970s and in the 1980s and was also an Olympian. In 1980 he competed at the Moscow Olympic Games and finished in fourth place in men’s C2 500 metres event together with Jerzy Dunajski. He was also a multiple Polish national champion in men’s C1 500 and 1000 metres events (1976, 1978, 1980, 1983, 1985).

Canoe Sprint part of the 2018 European Universities Games
Canoe Sprint part of the 2018 European Universities Games

It has been confirmed that canoe sprint events will be part of the European Universities Games for the first time in 2018. The games will be organised between 15th and 27th July in Coimbra, a home of Portugal’s oldest University. Canoeing events will take place in nearby Montemor-o-Velho, a venue which will also host Canoe Sprint World Championships later this year. Canoeing events are scheduled for 21st, 22nd and 23rd July.
