Young German and Hungarian paddlers dominate the first finals of the EYOF

The first medals for the fastest young canoe sprint athletes competing in Győr, Hungary, at the EYOF have been awarded. Future stars of canoe sprint have competed in the 500 metres semi-finals and finals A and B today. German team won three gold and two silver medals and Hungary two gold, three silver and a bronze medal.


The first day of the canoe sprint finals at the EYOF in Hungary brought celebration of eight teams whose athletes won medals today in the 500 metres A finals in K1M, K1W, C1M, C1W, K2M, K2W, C2 mix and K4 mix events. German team was the most successful with three gold and two silver medals. In a total medal count the host nation – Hungary – picked up the most medals, six altogether: two gold, three silver and a bronze. Belarus, Russia and Spain each won one gold medal, Belarus also two bronze medals and Russia one silver. Slovakia finished the day with two silver and one bronze medal, Czech Republic celebrated three bronze medals, while Denmark won one bronze medal.
 
The first gold medallist of the day was Moritz Willi Florstedt from Germany who was the fastest in men’s K1 500 metres A final. Nikita Byzov from Russia and Mark Opavszky from Hungary joined him on the winner’s podium. This was not the only medal of the day for Florstedt and Byzov. Russian Byzov paddled very well in men’s K2 final with Dmitrii Morgunov to celebrate the gold medal in this event. German Moritz Willi Florstedt was even more successful, winning silver medal in K2M 500 meters final together with Elias Miguel Kurth and another gold medal in K4 mix event, once more with Kurth. They were accompanied by Vanessa Yvonne Bülow and Svenja Larissa Hardy.
 
Girls who celebrated gold in the K4 mix event were the fastest in women’s K2 500 metres final. Bülow and Hardy crossed the finish line ahead of Hungarian duo Szabina Szellak – Eszter Rendessy and Czech crew Katerina Zarubova – Adela Hazova. Svenja Larissa Hardy also picked up a silver medal in women’s K1 final. She was less than a second slower than Szabina Szellak (HUN), while Sara Corfixen Milthers (DEN) finished third in this event.
 
Manuel Fontan Senorans won a gold medal for Spain in men’s C1 500 metres event. Benedek Horvath (HUN) finished second and Jiri Minarik (CZE) third in this final. Both Minarik and Horvath stood once more on the winner’s podium today. Horvath joined forces with Csenge Molnar in C2 mix event to win silver medal, and Minarik finished third with Denisa Rahova in the same event. Anastasiya Zhuk and Uladzislau Shakhnitski (BLR) celebrated gold in C2 mix final.
 
Csenge Molnar (HUN) was the best in women’s C1 500 metres final, finishing the race almost three seconds faster than Lucia Valova (SVK) and Anastasiya Zhuk (BLR).
 
Slovak kayakers Richard Nemeth and Martin Hvojnik were too among those athletes who picked up at least two medals today. They finished third in men’s K2 final and were second together with Karolina Seregiova and Romana Jakubisova in the K4 mix event. Belarusian K4 mix Hanna Pashschanka, Maksim Khutski, Iryna Shkred and Ilya Kazlouski finished third.
 
The canoe sprint competition will continue on Friday with qualifications and heats in the 200 metres event, while the medals in these events will be awarded on Saturday.
