Ukrainian canoeing mourns the death of young canoeist 3.11.2023

The Ukrainian Canoe Federation and canoeing community in Ukraine are in shock after the tragic death of young canoe sprint athlete Bogdan Salivon.


16-year-old Ukrainian canoeist Bogdan Salivon was killed by a lightning in Horishniy Plavnyi. According to the reports by the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Poltava region, on 1st November, during bad weather, lightning struck a training group of a local club while they were paddling on a lake.
 
The Ukrainian Canoe Federation says the tragic accident occurred during training in Barbara Bay when a group of paddlers was returning to the shore due to deteriorating weather conditions. At that time, one of the boats was struck by lightning. As a result of being struck by lightning, the athlete fell and disappeared in the water. The search and rescue lasted about four hours, with police, rescuers, municipal guards and the public involved in the search.
 
The young athlete was found and taken ashore, but unfortunately his life could not be saved.
 
We would like to express sincere condolences to his family, friends and all Ukrainian canoeing community. Bogdan, rest in peace.
