Triumphant Return of Serhii Yemelianov to the Paracanoe European Championships

Triumphant Return of Serhii Yemelianov to the Paracanoe European Championships 21.6.2025

The first day of finals at the 2025 ECA Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe European Championships in Czechia also brought the first medal events in paracanoe. Great Britain leads the medal table convincingly, while Serhii Yemelianov made a successful return to the European top under a new flag.

In the men's KL3 200 final, a familiar name stood on the top step of the podium. The fastest was 32-year-old Serhii Yemelianov, one of the most successful paracanoeists of all time. He previously won two Paralympic gold medals and multiple European and World Championships titles for Ukraine. Now competing for Georgia, he has begun a new chapter of success. He was joined on the podium by Britain's Jonathan Young and Spain’s Juan Valle, the defending European champion.

Great Britain ended the first day with the most medals, collecting six. In the women’s KL2 200, Charlotte Henshaw celebrated another major career achievement, finishing nearly four seconds ahead of last year’s champion, Katalin Varga of Hungary. The bronze medal went to Germany’s Anja Adler.

Hope Gordon claimed gold in the women’s VL3 200, ahead of Charlotte Henshaw in second place and France’s Elea Charvet in third. Last year’s world champion Henshaw finished 1.270 seconds behind the new titleholder. The defending European champion, Ukraine’s Natalia Lahutenko, placed sixth this time.

Another British victory came from David Phillipson, who won the men’s KL2 200. Italy’s Christian Volpi finished second, and last year’s winner, Mykola Syniuk of Ukraine, came third.

Hungary’s Peter Pal Kiss remains unbeaten in the men’s KL1 200. The Paralympic champion from Tokyo and Paris finished more than four and a half seconds ahead of last year’s European champion, Remy Boulle of France. Third place went to fellow Hungarian Robert Suba.

Germany’s Moritz Berthold won the men’s VL1 200, finishing ahead of Italy’s Alessio Bedin and Britain’s Taylor Gough.

In the women’s KL1 200, which was held as a non-championships event, first place went to Ukraine’s Maryna Mazhula.

The 2025 ECA Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe European Championships will conclude on Sunday with five races in paracanoe.
