Seville welcomed over 700 paddlers at the Winter Championships 20.3.2018

With everyone waiting for winter to finally wave goodbye and to welcome spring and summer in Europe, Spanish Seville hosted a special winter championships where paddlers compete in 2000 and 5000 metres events. The 2000 metres time trial served as a qualifying event for the 5000 metres finals. In the record breaking edition of the championships with over 700 athletes from 114 clubs participating on the Guadalquivir River Maria Corbera, Begona Lazkano, Tono Campos and Javier Hernanz celebrated the Spanish Winter Champion titles. Elena Ayuso, Elena Naveiro, Juan Rodriguez Gonzalez, Juan Valle and Javier Reja celebrated wins in paracanoeing part of the competition.


Seville, a popular location for winter training camps of many international canoe sprinters, attracted record number of Spanish paddlers who took part in the Winter Championships, an event which attracts specialists for shorter and longer distances. In women’s K1 event Basque Begona Lazkano celebrated a win in front of Eva Barrios, who was a favorite of the race after winning eight consecutive times in the previous years. It was a tough race until the final strokes of the 5000 metres course. Laura Pedruelo picked up a bronze medal.

 

In women’s C1 event it was a surprising win for Maria Corbera, who switched from kayak to canoe with this season. In a debut performance and her first win in the new category she beat Patricia Coco and Antia Jacome who joined her on the winner’s podium.
 
Manuel Antonio Campos, multiple European and World Championships medallist in canoe sprint and canoe marathon, won the men’s C1 5000 metres final. 32-year-old paddler from Galicia finished the race in front of his colleagues from the same club, Diego Romero and Noel Dominguez.

 

 


In men’s kayak final Francisco Cubelos dictated the pace from the start. At the 3000 metres mark there was still a large group of kayakers paddling together, but later after the 4000 metres Javier Hernanz took over the front position. He then crossed the finish line in front of Cubelos, while Inigo Pena took the third place.  
 
 
Seville also hosted the Spain’s best paracanoeists. Elena Ayuso took the win in women’s KL1, Elena Naveiro in women’s KL3, Juan Rodriguez Gonzalez in men’s KL1, Javier Reja in men’s KL2 and Juan Valle in KL3.
 
 
In special club’s classification it was a historical day for Aranjuez Canoe Club, who took the overall win in front of Kayak Tudense, a club which celebrated the past 12 titles.
