Serghei Tarnovschi loses his Olympic medal

It has almost been a year since the 2016 Rio Olympic Games where Serghei Tarnovschi from Moldova finished the men's C1 1000 metres event in the third place. He did not enjoy for long though as ICF has placed him under a provisional suspension after the pre-event test uncovered the presence of banned substance GHRP-2.

The 20-year-old Ukrainian-born athlete has later been suspended for four years and tried to terminate the ban with appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). He insisted he was not at fault and that he had accidentally consumed the prohibited substance from a contaminated supplement. His lawyer argued he should only be sanctioned for months and not years.

The ruling of CAS stated he “did not successfully prove the absence of intent in connection with his anti-doping rule violation simply by proffering the above theory without any corroborating evidence,” which means he will lose his Olympic medal.

Ilia Shtokalov, Russian canoeist who finished fourth in Rio, will now receive the bronze medal.
