Sebastian Brendel tries himself in SUP 12.7.2018

Three-time Olympic Champion Sebastian Brendel is preparing for the most important race of the season – the 2018 Canoe Sprint World Championships which will be held at the end of August in Portugal. And he is not only preparing in his canoe. In July he competed at the SUP World Cup in Scharbeutz, Germany.

30-year-old paddler took the opportunity and participated at the SUP World Cup race for the second time in his career. Last year he finished 19th in the long distance race of the largest SUP event that is held in Europe and attracted competitors from 22 nations. This year Brendel again competed in the 10000 metres race and was 38th. “This is a great event here in Scharbeutz with great people and relaxed atmosphere. For me, the fun is in the foreground, but it is impressive what these SUP professionals have on it. In contrast to canoeing you have to contest many turns in the SUP. I'll work on that and improve for the next time,” said Brendel.

Brendel, who will be one of the main favorites in canoe events of the Canoe Sprint World Championships in Montemor-o-Velho, has included SUP into his training process, both in home and during his winter training camps in Florida. He points out that this is ‘nice balance for the head and muscles’. After including SUP into his training process he noticed improvement also in canoe, especially when it comes to paddling sides. Brendel who paddles on the left in his canoe started to use the right side as well without capsizing, “The good thing about the SUP is that I'm claiming both sides. Thanks to the SUP training, I can now also stay in the Canadian if I paddle right. The fact that I can do it now is a great sign. It says I have developed my motor. So that certainly makes me better in canoe racing.”
