Preparations for the Canoe Marathon European Championships well underway

Preparations for the Canoe Marathon European Championships well underway 18.4.2018

There are a little over two months left until the 2018 ECA Canoe Marathon European Championships in Croatia. Early in April ECA Canoe Marathon Technical Delegate Jorn Cronberg and member of the ICF Canoe Marathon Committee Ruud Heijselaar visited Metković, a venue that will host the European Championships between 2nd and 8th July.

The reason for the visit was to check the status of the preparations for this canoeing event and to meet with the local members of the organising committee. The preparations seem to be on schedule, but there are still some issues with the portage area, which will be the main task in the following weeks for the organisers to solve. The portage needs some construction works for entry and exit and a general surface update.

As always an important part of the event is logistics, and Metković has good one. All competition and administration facilities are within a few hundred metres, and accommodation in the town centre is less than 20 minutes away. The important thing is also a visibility along the whole course.

Jorn Cronberg was satisfied after his visit, “We left with a good impression of the preparations, and we are confident that the organisers will put on a very good event.”

Shortly after their visit in Croatia Jorn Cronberg and Ruud Heijselaar visited Budapest as well. Hungarian Canoe Federation wishes to welcome Europe’s best canoe marathon paddlers in 2020. ECA’s delegation visited and inspected the proposed venue for the Hungarian bid for European Canoe Marathon Championships 2020.

“The venue presented appears to be able to offer an event according to the requirements, and now we are just waiting for the confirmation letter from the Hungarian federation before recommending the bid to the ECA Board,” Jorn Cronberg said after the inspection.
