Portugal claims two gold medals on the second day of the 2021 ECA Canoe Marathon European Championships in Moscow

Portugal claims two gold medals on the second day of the 2021 ECA Canoe Marathon European Championships in Moscow 9.7.2021

The 2021 ECA Canoe Marathon European Championships in Moscow is in a full swing. The second competition day brought U23 women’s kayak event and U23 men’s kayak and canoe events. Portuguese team won two medals today.

It was a hot day on the Krylatskoye course and the Portuguese paddlers were on fire. Sergio Maciel, multiple European Championships medallist already from the junior category, took the win in men’s U23 canoe event. It took him one hour 51 minutes and 11 seconds to complete the 22.6 kilometres long course in the Russian capital city. Maciel was a minute and 38 seconds faster than Daniel Laczo from Hungary on second place. Bronze medal, too, went to Hungary thanks to Mate Zsidai.

Portuguese anthem played in honour of Adriano Conceicao. 22-year-old Portuguese was the fastest in men’s U23 kayak event on a 26.2 kilometres long course. Hungarian representative Zoltan Zoboki was second and Czech paddler Dan Sedlacek third. In the last edition of the ECA Canoe Marathon European Championships Mads Pedersen from Denmark took the win in this event (also later at World Championships),but Denmark decided not to participate this year.

Dorina Fekete took over the crown of the European Champion in women’s U23 kayak event from her Hungarian compatriot Lili Katona, who was the fastest in 2019 at the European Championships in Decize. It was a very tight fight for a gold medal between two Hungarians and at the end Fekete found more power than Csilla Rugasi who won silver medal. Marta Witkowska from Poland was third.

The men’s junior C2 event was not an official European Championships event because not enough crews and countries participated this time to fulfil the official event rule. Hungarians Gergely Lugosi and Istvan Juhasz were the fastest on the 19 kilometres long course. Romanian duo Adrian Stepan – Victor Stepan came in second, one minute and 40 seconds behind, while Andras Ugroczky – Bulcsu Ferencz from Hungary occupied third place.

On Saturday the championships continues with junior men’s K1 race and senior women’s C1 and K1 as well as senior men’s C1 and K1 events.
