Ponte de Lima to Take Centre Stage for Canoe Marathon Enthusiasts 1.6.2025

Portugal, a powerhouse in canoeing and renowned for its excellent organisation of major international canoeing events, will this week host one of the highlights of the European canoeing season. The 2025 ECA Canoe Marathon European Championships will take place in Ponte de Lima between 2nd and 8th June.


The Portuguese national team is expected to line up in full strength for their home European Championships in canoe marathon. On the start line in Ponte de Lima will be local hero Fernando Pimenta, one of the sport’s biggest stars, alongside the experienced Jose Ramalho and rising talent Maria Gomes. Also competing will be Rui Lacerda, Sergio Maciel, Norberto Mourao, and others.
 
The competition will be fierce, with all the strongest national teams in canoe marathon in attendance, including Spain, Hungary, and Poland. The start list features many big names in the sport such as Liudmyla Babak, Melina Andersson, Manuel Campos, Ivan Alonso, Walter Bouzan, Oscar Grana, Diego Romero, Eva Barrios, Irati Osa, Tania Alvarez, Vanda Kiszli, Zsofia Kisban, Adrian Boros, Jon Vold, Mateusz Borgiel, Mateusz Zuchora, Joakim Lindberg, Deys Davydov, Jeremy Candy, Philip Knudsen, Marcel Paufler, Krisztina Bedocs, Jakub Zavrel, Katerina Milova and many more.
 
The main part of the Championships will feature short races and canoe marathon events, with Senior, U23, Junior, and Paracanoe athletes in action. Races will take place from Thursday to Sunday, with first Paracanoe events scheduled for Wednesday.

 

Participating nations: Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Kosovo, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine, AIN.

 

On Monday and Tuesday, the venue will be taken over by the Masters, who will compete over two days in women’s and men’s kayak, men’s canoe, men’s canoe double, and men’s, women’s, and mixed kayak doubles. Athletes from 17 countries will take part in the Masters events.

 

Participating nations: Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland.
