Fair Play Award for Polish kayaker Bukowski

Fair Play Award for Polish kayaker Bukowski 24.5.2018

Polish Olympic Committee organised the 51st Fair Play awards ceremony last Wednesday, 23rd May, in Warsaw. The awards were given to those sportsmen and sportswomen who presented outstanding fair play behaviour. Among the winners was Polish kayaker Dariusz Bukowski who earned this award for his act during the last year’s Masters Canoe Marathon World Cup in South Africa.

47-year-old Polish paddler Dariusz Bukowski received a Fair Play award for his altruistic act during the 2017 Masters Canoe Marathon World Cup in Pietermarizburg, South Africa. At the Masters race he helped his injured rival carry a boat in the last portage. Despite missing the chance to win a medal, he did not hesitate and helped his rival Michael Stewart from South Africa who ruptured his muscle.

“I saw the tears in his eyes and he could not carry his kayak which weights 20 kilograms, so I took his kayak and had mine too and I ran with two boats. I did not think about my chances. When crowd saw what I did they shouted ‘Poland’, which gave me such a boost that I did not feel these 40 kilograms,” said Bukowski who then finished in fifth place in masters K1 event.

After this Michael’s partner Gustav Smook with whom he should paddle in K2 event as well asked Bukowski to paddle with him in the K2 race. Their request was granted by chief judge and the South African – Polish crew ended the race with bronze medal.
