European athletes successful at the ICF Canoe Freestyle World Championships

European athletes successful at the ICF Canoe Freestyle World Championships 17.10.2023

World’s best canoe freestyle paddlers, among them many from Europe, competed in Columbus, Georgia, United States of America, at this year’s ICF Canoe Freesytle World Championships. While majority of the medals stayed in the host country, European representatives recorded some great success, including World Champion titles of Ottilie Robinson-Shaw (GBR) and Tim Rees (GER).

Athletes from the host nation showed great form at their home soil to claim majority of the World Championships medals, however European paddlers had glory as well. Especially British representative Ottilie Robinson-Shaw, who claimed gold medal in women’s canoe decked surface event and two silver medals in women’s kayak surface and squirt.

“It was a tricky competition, so it’s nice to be at the top again. I was really disappointed in my paddling. When I go out to paddle I’m not just trying to win the gold, I want to do a ride that I can look back on and feel really proud, and I am sad that I didn’t necessarily hit that. My dream for me is that whenever I compete I can do a ride that I’m truly proud of, that have pushed the barriers for women’s kayaking, but also to try and be at the top. That’s what I want to do,” said Robinson-Shaw, who defended her title from Nottingham last year.

Impressive was also a performance of young German athlete Tim Rees, who became the first male athlete to successfully defend his junior freestyle World Champion title. The gold medal of Rees was not questioned even for a bit as he won the title with a score of 963.33 points, he had over 400 points more than his rivals. In this event the history was written with the silver medal of Onni Eronen, who won the first medal for Finland in freestyle. Britain’s Timmy Hill secured himself a bronze medal with his final ride.

“It feels pretty great to break a record, there are some pretty big names in the game who didn’t make it, so it feels pretty great to be the first person to do it. I was pretty happy with my performance overall in the competition, I think I could still have gone a bit higher, but I’m happy with my result,” said Rees, who moved to Canada for three months in order to prepare for this World Championships.

“I knew that at the beginning of the season I was quite far behind in waveboating, because we don’t have any waves in Germany, but I’m pretty stoked that I could catch all the other athletes. I came to Canada, I could barely airscrew, I could barely PanAm, and to throw all those tricks in one ride, I’m pretty happy with it,” young German added.

Great Britain’s Tamsyn McConchie left the World Championships with two bronze medals in her pocket thanks to her good rides in women’s canoe decked surface final and in squirt. Zofia Tula from Poland celebrated silver medal in women’s canoe decked surface final, France’s Tom Dolle won bronze in men’s kayak surface event and German Philip Josef was third in open canoe surface event.
