Etienne Chappell won Wales Young Sportsman of the year award

Etienne Chappell won Wales Young Sportsman of the year award 15.1.2020

Young British canoe slalom and extreme slalom paddler Etienne Chappell won the Wales Young Sportsman of the Year 2019 award at the BBC Cymru Wales Sports Personality of the Year Awards in Newport.

Etienne had an excellent season 2019. The 18-year-old paddler won medals in canoe slalom as well as in extreme slalom events. He finished third in men’s K1 at the ECA Junior and U23 Canoe Slalom European Championships in Liptovsky Mikulaš as well as gold medal in MK1 team event of the Junior Canoe Slalom World Championships in Krakow.

In extreme slalom he claimed gold medal at Junior World Championships in Krakow, and also won at the first Extreme Slalom World Cup race of the season, held in London – Lee Valley.
Speaking on the award, Etienne said: “To win something in my home country is just the best. I can't think of anything that could be better. Considering extreme slalom is such a new and niche sport, and I managed to get on the GB team and race internationally for us against other athletes I look up to is just insane.”
