Double win for Mallory Franklin in Pau 17.3.2024

Pau hosted the second race in the Pyrenees Cup race series, and this canoe slalom and kayak cross race also counted as the second race in the 2024 ECA Open Canoe Slalom European Cup race series. British paddler Mallory Franklin recorded two wins, while the other first places stayed in the hands of French paddlers.


The first international canoe slalom races on European soil are taking place this March and strong international competition was held this weekend in Pau. The second Pyrenees Cup race, which also counts for the 2024 ECA Open Canoe Slalom European Cup series, attracted many paddlers from more than 20 countries. There were athletes from France, Spain, Andorra, Czechia, Poland, Great Britain, Belgium, Norway, Ukraine, Sweden, Portugal, Germany, Croatia, Netherlands, Switzerland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Australia, Canada, Senegal, Mauritius and Comoros on the start line.

Mallory Franklin, Olympic Games medallist and multiple World and European Champion, recorded two win in Pau. British paddler produced the best time in women’s canoe final. She was the fastest already in heats and in the final A she finished the course 0.66 seconds faster than Angele Hug (FRA) in second place. Spanish canoeist Nuria Vilarrubla was third, 1.28 seconds behind Franklin.

On Sunday, Franklin crossed the finish line in first place also in women’s kayak cross final. There Doriane Delassus (FRA) picked up second place and Miren Lazkano (ESP) was third. Emma Vuitton was the fourth finalist.

In all the other events, French paddlers took the glory. Emma Vuitton was the best in women’s kayak final. Her compatriots Coline Charel and Romaine Prigent took second and third place respectively.

Anatole Delassus was unbeatable in men’s kayak. Young French kayaker was the fastest in heats, and remained on top also in the final. He was just under a second faster than Mathurin Madore (+0.94), while Edgar Paleau-Brasseur took third position.

Mewen Debliquy was the fastest canoeist on both competition days. First, he won in men’s canoe heats, to repeat the success in Sunday’s finals. Debliquy set the time 99.28, which was 0.84 seconds faster than Miquel Trave from Spain. Titouan Estanguet (FRA) was third.

In men’s kayak cross final Leo Vuitton found the fastest lines to reach the finish and celebrated a win ahead of another French paddler Tanguy Adisson, while Joao Cunha from Portugal won third place. Polish kayaker Michal Pasiut was fourth.

The next race in the ECA Open Canoe Slalom European Cup series will be held next week in Huningue.
