Bedřich Dvořák (1930 – 2018) 15.3.2018

Czech Canoe Union informed with great sorrow that Bedřich Dvořák passed away on Wednesday, 14th March. Bedřich Dvořák was a legend and one of the greatest personalities of Czech Canoeing. He was born in 1930 and was introduced to canoeing in 1940s in SK Smíchov, but later switched to KVS Praha. A club he never left. Dvořák was an Olympian representing Czechoslovakia at 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki. He competed in K2 10000 metres event and finished seventh. He was a father of Libor Dvořák, 1980 Olympian, and grandfather of Filip Dvořák, 2012 European Champion.

Two years after the Helsinki Olympic performance Bedřich Dvořák took up a coaching job and started to train young athletes at his club. During his coaching career he helped hundredths of young athletes. He celebrated success with his son Libor and Jiří Vrdlovec. Libor Dvořák competed at 1980 Moscow Olympics and finished fourth in men’s C1 1000 metres event. Bedřich Dvořák’s grandson Filip continued the family tradition and had much success in C2 boat. He won gold medal at European Championships in 2012, another bronze medal in 2014 and two bronze medals at 2013 World Championships.

Bedřich Dvořák did not only celebrate sporting success of his protégées but also received special recognition himself. He was introduced to a Hall of Fame by a Union of professional coaches and also received a Lifelong contribution award by the Czech Fair Play club.

We would like to express sincere condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace.
